Full English breakfast in York, cooked to order all day

There are plenty of fry-ups in York. We think a proper full English deserves a bit more care than most get — here’s what goes on our plate, how it’s cooked, and why so many guests come back for it.

All-day breakfast plates at Zest brunch bar in York

The plate, piece by piece

A full English is only as good as its weakest part, so we don’t cut corners on any of it. This is what arrives on the plate when you order our Full English (£12.95):

  • Cumberland sausages. Browned properly, never pale.
  • Bacon rashers. Cooked so the fat crisps up.
  • Poached eggs. Free-range, like every egg we use.
  • A sautéed potato fritter. Our take on the hash brown: crisp on the outside, soft in the middle.
  • Baked beans. Every full English needs them.
  • Grilled tomato. A little sweetness and acidity to cut through everything else.
  • Sourdough. Freshly toasted, for mopping up the yolk and the beans.

It’s a generous plate, but not an overloaded one — enough to set you up for a day on your feet without needing a lie-down afterwards. There’s nothing unusual about that line-up, and that’s deliberate. A full English shouldn’t need reinventing. It needs good ingredients, cooked properly and brought to the table hot.

Cooked to order, not kept warm

A lot of breakfast places cook their sausages and bacon in batches first thing and keep everything warm until it’s ordered. It’s quicker, but you can taste the difference. At Zest, each full English is cooked when you order it.

That does mean that on a busy Saturday morning you may wait a few minutes longer than you would for a buffet plate. We think it’s worth it, and our reviews suggest most guests agree. Everything reaches the table at the same time and at the right temperature.

Why the full English still matters

The cooked breakfast has been part of English life for centuries. It became the classic hotel and guesthouse breakfast in the Victorian era and turned into the fry-up everyone knows over the twentieth century. Every region has its own opinions: black pudding or not, fried bread or toast, mushrooms or no mushrooms. Ask a table of Yorkshire folk what belongs on a proper full English and you’ll get a lively debate.

Our version keeps to the essentials and cooks them well. For some of the visitors to York who sit down with us, it’s their very first full English, so we want it to be one they remember for the right reasons.

Bringing a group for breakfast

A full English is a natural choice for a group. Friends in York for the weekend, families on a day out, a team breakfast before work or a birthday morning all work well around a table of cooked breakfasts. Groups are always welcome for a normal table booking. Book ahead for weekends and larger tables, and let us know about any dietary requirements so the kitchen can plan.

A full English at any hour

We don’t stop serving breakfast at 11:30. Our full breakfast menu runs from the moment we open at 9am until the kitchen closes at 4pm, so a full English at 2pm is cooked with exactly the same care as one first thing in the morning.

That makes a real difference in a city like York. Visitors arrive on late trains, sightseeing runs over, and weekend lie-ins happen. Whatever time you get to us, the full English is still on.

We’re open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm and on Sunday from 9am to 4pm.

Want something similar, but different?

If you love a cooked breakfast but fancy a change, a few other plates on the menu scratch the same itch:

  • Clifford’s Tower — £10.95. Named after the stone keep down the road, and just as sturdy.
  • Beef Brisket Benedict — £13.95. Rich, hearty and ideal if you’ve skipped dinner the night before.
  • Turkish Shakshuka — £10.95. Eggs baked in a spiced tomato sauce, for anyone who wants their breakfast with some heat.
  • Mediterranean Breakfast — £13.95. A lighter, brighter cooked plate that’s almost as popular as the full English.

Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options run across the whole menu, so if the traditional full English isn’t right for you, ask the team what swaps they can make. Browse everything on our all-day breakfast menu.

A full English with a cocktail

It’s not the most traditional pairing, but it’s one of the most popular at Zest. Our cocktails are served from 9am, and any two of the same drink are 2-4-1 all day, every day. A full English with a Mimosa or a Bloody Mary makes a weekend breakfast feel like an occasion. If you’ve got a busy day ahead, an Espresso Martini doubles as your morning coffee.

We’ve written more about our favourite food and drink combinations on our breakfast, brunch and cocktails page.

If you’d rather stick to coffee, our freshly ground Italian coffee is made by baristas who take it seriously, and there’s tea, smoothies and soft drinks too.

The perfect start to a day in York

A proper full English is the best fuel for a day on your feet, and York is a city you explore on foot. From our spot on Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate, you’re well placed for a morning of sightseeing:

  • Head down Coppergate to the Jorvik Viking Centre, then on to Clifford’s Tower and the York Castle Museum.
  • Walk down to the river at King’s Staith and follow the River Ouse.
  • Head the other way, along Parliament Street, to the shops and the market stalls of St Sampson’s Square.

Or do it the other way round: see the sights in the morning and come back for a late full English when you’ve earned it.

Is this the best full English breakfast in York?

That’s for you to decide, and everyone has their own favourite. What we can say is that the full English comes up more than any other dish in our Google reviews, where we have a 4.9-star average from more than 440 reviews. For more of what our guests say, read our round-up of the best breakfast in York.

What our regulars order with it

Most people pair their full English with a freshly ground coffee — a flat white or a cappuccino is the usual choice. Others add a fresh smoothie on the side, or turn a late breakfast into a proper occasion with a round of 2-4-1 Mimosas. If you’re sharing a table, ordering one full English and one Mediterranean Breakfast between two is a popular way to try both sides of the menu.
